Principle 1
Find purpose by embracing the journey
The resilient designer might be lost now, but knows every day is a step closer to finding their purpose.
In such a busy and loud world, it is only natural to feel lost at times and question, “What is my purpose? Where am I going?”
We found through our research that students often are not able to articulate to themselves or others why they are studying design. Many students returning to study a Master’s degree after a few years in professional practice could not explain their motivations to do so, only that they felt they needed “a change in the direction of their professional and subsequently, their life.”
To be a resilient designer is to accept that we are not always 100% clear in our purpose or motivation, but that every project we undertake helps us learn more about ourselves and find clearer meaning in our lives.
In short, Principle 1 asks us to be kind to ourselves and embrace the uncertainty of the journey.
To initiate learning about Principle 1, we recommend reflective practice to “connect the dots.” Look to past projects, life experiences, or courses and map on a timeline where you have come from to where you are today. What projects form the dots, and what have you learned from each dot? How have you evolved over this timeline in your own knowledge, skills, and worldview? By following your past trajectory of projects and your own personal evolution, you will be more able to see “where you are going.” While your purpose might still not be 100% clear, it does enable perspective.
