Never Waste a Good Crisis with Rebecca Price

An introduction to the Resilient Designers project, how it started and why the world needs resilient designers.
Rebecca Price is an Assistant Professor of Transition Design and Master Programme Director of Strategic Product Design at Delft University of Technology.
In the introductory episode, Brooke welcomes the driving force behind the project, Rebecca Price, who shares her thoughts on today’s design culture and how a crisis led her to a profound discovery of how resilience at its core, born out of mostly negative experiences, offers us transformative knowledge. Or in her own words, don’t waste a good crisis. In this conversation, we explore why we need resilient designers, what motivated her to start the project, and what the Resilient Designers project is.

In this opening episode of the Resilient Designers podcast, host Brooke welcomes Dr. Rebecca Price, Assistant Professor of Transition Design at the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering at TU Delft. Dr. Price, based in the Department of Design, Organisation and Strategy, is dedicated to training professional designers capable of addressing complex systemic problems. Her impressive background includes multiple “Most Inspiring Teacher” awards and a PhD in design-led innovation from Queensland University of Technology.

The podcast explores the Resilient Designers project, which originated during the pandemic through observations of design students. Dr. Price explains the concept of resilience, noting how negative experiences can provide transformative knowledge and help individuals navigate life’s challenges. The conversation examines how implementing resilience can challenge today’s design culture, emphasizing that the design process can cultivate wellbeing while improving design practice.

Rebecca Price highlights the significance of community and self-appreciation, emphasizing the value of learning from each other. Through facilitating workshops that formed the foundation of the Resilient Designers project and its ten principles, she discovered the project’s pioneering potential by creating safe spaces for sharing personal experiences of resilience in professional settings. The project shares its findings through free open educational data on their website and a booklet. As a first step toward systemic change, this booklet will be distributed to Strategic Product Design master students, paving the way for integrating resilience learning into the curriculum. Through this evolving journey from educational resources to industry practice, the Resilient Designers project aims to fundamentally reshape how designers work and thrive in their profession.
